Mexico ready for European Tour!
After practicing for a month once the Central American Games were finished in Mayaguez the National Team of Mexico is ready to start their friendly matches in the old continent as preparation for their historical participation in the World Championships in Italy 2010.
They will have a good number of friendlies facing tough teams as the Belgium National Team, Knack Randstad, Paris Volley, Cannes and the National Team of Cameroun among others.
The group is extremely excited to be part of this uncommon preparation since it is not easy for them to have this opportunity every year to face real professional players in Europe.
Hopefully this will give the group an extra boost and improve their level as a team to be at their best at the end of September in Reggio Calabria, Italy where they will face even tougher teams in USA, Venezuela and Argentina in their pool.
Ivan Contreras, captain of the Mexican National team, will be joining them in Switzerland for their first match after reporting with Knack for a couple of days.

Mexico comes back from behind to clinch the bronze medal!
MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 29, 2010 – Mexico came back from two sets down to defeat Dominican Republic in five sets (21-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-16, 15-7) claiming the bronze medal in the men’s volleyball tournament of the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games. For Mexico, owners of five gold and six silvers, this its fifth bronze medal in the twenty editions of the tournament.
Ivan Contreras and Tomas Aguilera registered 22 and 20 points for Mexico while Samuel Cordova and Irving Bricio totaled 16 and 14 respectively. Dominican Jose Caceres accounted for 24 points and Pedro Garcia and Ernis Palomino registered 15 and 11.
“For several times now in recent times we have been able to come from behind to defeat the Dominican Republic,” Mexican Contreras said. “I am extremely happy with this result but I also have to say that it was not easy.”
“The same thing has happened to us in the last two or three tournaments playing against Mexico. It’s something unbelievable and out of every aspect of volleyball. You have to give credit the Mexican team for the character they showed.”
“The people coming off the bench gave us the victory proving once again that volleyball is a sport team not a sport of individuals,” Mexican coach Jorge Azair said.
“The reserve players of Mexico changed the game with their defense and reception and we were not able to make the adjustments,” Dominican coach Jacinto Campechano said.

Venezuela advances to men’s final match
MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 28, 2010 – Venezuela scored a convincing straight-set victory (25-21, 25-21, 25-16) over Mexico to advance to the men’s volleyball gold medal match at the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games. The Venezuelans dominated in the game at the net with a 15-5 advantage in blocks and established an 8-2 gap in serving aces.
Ivan Marquez was the best scorer of the winning side with 14 points, including three aces. Maximo Montoya and Harry Gomez each charted 13 points with four and two blocks respectively, and Luis Diaz added 8. Mexican Jose Martell topped his side with 8 points while Iván Contreras and Samuel Cordova registered 7 apiece.
“We are very happy with this victory since Venezuela had not been playing in the gold medal match in recent years,” Gomez said. “Our young players performed well, especially Maximo, and that forces the veteran players to commit themselves with our clear goal of winning the gold.”
Mexican Contreras commented: “We had moments of good volleyball and others of poor volleyball. It is a shame that we couldn’t keep the pressure in the first two sets. Tomorrow’s match is very important and we are going for it."
