Mexico comes back from behind to clinch the bronze medal!

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 29, 2010 – Mexico came back from two sets down to defeat Dominican Republic in five sets (21-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-16, 15-7) claiming the bronze medal in the men’s volleyball tournament of the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games. For Mexico, owners of five gold and six silvers, this its fifth bronze medal in the twenty editions of the tournament.

Ivan Contreras and Tomas Aguilera registered 22 and 20 points for Mexico while Samuel Cordova and Irving Bricio totaled 16 and 14 respectively. Dominican Jose Caceres accounted for 24 points and Pedro Garcia and Ernis Palomino registered 15 and 11.

“For several times now in recent times we have been able to come from behind to defeat the Dominican Republic,” Mexican Contreras said. “I am extremely happy with this result but I also have to say that it was not easy.”

“The same thing has happened to us in the last two or three tournaments playing against Mexico. It’s something unbelievable and out of every aspect of volleyball. You have to give credit the Mexican team for the character they showed.”

“The people coming off the bench gave us the victory proving once again that volleyball is a sport team not a sport of individuals,” Mexican coach Jorge Azair said.

“The reserve players of Mexico changed the game with their defense and reception and we were not able to make the adjustments,” Dominican coach Jacinto Campechano said.

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 28, 2010 – Venezuela scored a convincing straight-set  victory (25-21, 25-21, 25-16) over Mexico to advance to the men’s volleyball gold medal match at the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games. The Venezuelans dominated in the game at the net with a 15-5 advantage in blocks and established an 8-2 gap in serving aces.

Mexican Jose Martell topped his side with 8 points while Iván Contreras and Samuel Cordova registered 7 apiece.

“We are very happy with this victory since Venezuela had not been playing in the gold medal match in recent years,” Gomez said. “Our young players performed well, especially Maximo, and that forces the veteran players to commit themselves with our clear goal of winning the gold.”

Mexican Contreras commented: “We had moments of good volleyball and others of poor volleyball. It is a shame that we couldn’t keep the pressure in the first two sets. Tomorrow’s match is very important and we are going for it."

Mexico beats Barbados 3-0!

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 25, 2010 – Mexico improved its win-loss record to 2-0 in Pool B of the men’s volleyball tournament at the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games by defeating Barbados 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 30-28) on Sunday. Barbados dropped to 0-2 mark.

Mexicans Tomas Aguilera and Jose Martell topped the winners with 15 and 12 points with Aguilera totaling 8 blocks and two serving aces. Ivan Contreras and Jesus Rangel charted 9 and 8 points respectively. Elwyn Oxley and Fabian Cox finished in double figures for the defeated side with 17 and 11.

“We always have tough matches against Barbados and today was not different,” Mexican coach Jorge Azair said. “Without taking anything from Barbados, things got a little complicated in the third set when I tried to get some of my players in the rhythm. Now we have to focus in tomorrow’s match for the direct ticket to the semifinals. I think we can win it”.

“We had a slow start but in the third set we battled point by point,” Barbados’ coach Ludger Niles commented. “I think if we play more frequently with teams like Mexico and Dominican Republic we can be on par with them, so I would like to have more exchange between us in the future.”
